The smart lock isn't convenience: it's your best sales channel
Installing smart locks is almost always justified with one word: convenience. The guest lets themselves in, you save yourself the key handover. All true. But the data tells a bigger story — and a far more profitable one.
The guest who opens the door is inside your app
Every time a guest opens their door from their phone, they enter the digital panel for their booking. And there, in that very panel, lives everything you can sell them: the late check-out, the early check-in, the extras. The door isn’t just a key — it’s the reason to keep coming back, again and again, to the place where the sale happens.
We measured it across thousands of real bookings:
- 95% of guests with an electronic lock return to the panel to open the door.
- 8 times per stay on average — more than 101,000 openings in total.
- 96% of late check-out sales occur in properties with a lock.

Out of every 100 late check-out sales, 96 happen in properties with an electronic lock.
The key: almost everything sold is impulse
The late check-out, the early check-in… hardly anyone plans them. They’re bought at the last minute, on the fly, when the guest has the panel in front of them. And the impulse only kicks in if they’re inside. What gets them inside again and again? The lock.

Number of times the guest returns to the panel to open the door during their stay.
Each of those returns is a new chance to buy. The lock doesn’t sell the late check-out directly — it builds the recurrence that makes impulse buying possible.
Without a lock, the guest enters once and disappears
The contrast says it all. In properties without an electronic lock, the guest enters the panel once for check-in… and never comes back. Their digital presence switches off completely. Without recurrence, impulse buying simply doesn’t happen.
Digitising access means digitising revenue
The return on a smart lock isn’t just about saving yourself keys. It’s that it turns every stay into an active sales channel, one that works on its own, with no front desk and no friction. The guest feels the convenience; you feel the recurrence, on the bottom line.
